March is Red Cross Month
Sue Pierson

Sue Pierson, "Whether a disaster is unfolding internationally, nationally, or locally...we will be there."

Sue Pierson of Long Hill Township felt horrified by the images of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Like many people, she and her husband Doug made a financial donation. Unlike many people that was not enough for the Pierson’s.

“We just really wanted to be more directly involved in the relief effort,” says Sue. “We went down to the Red Cross and asked to be trained so we could head to Louisiana and reach those people directly.” The Pierson’s received extensive health and safety training in Mass Care, Mass Sheltering, Emergency Vehicle Driving, First Aid and CPR/AED and many other life saving courses. Not only did the Pierson’s assist in the relief effort for the Hurricanes of 2004, but Sue also deployed to Louisiana where thousands affected by Hurricane Gustav lost their homes and belongings.

Several days after the earthquake occurred in Haiti, our Disaster Action Team was responding to a house fire in Stirling. Pierson was one of the first people on the scene. “The wonderful thing about the Red Cross is the universal nature of the organization. Whether a disaster is unfolding internationally, nationally, or locally...we will be there.”
