March is Red Cross Month
Responding to House Fires in Winters Month

Our Disaster Action Team was called out late Tuesday afternoon, February 9th to respond to residents in crisis following a multi-unit apartment fire at 236 Morris Avenue, Springfield.
The fire consumed eight apartment units, although residents were allowed to enter two of those to retrieve personal belongings. Members of the Disaster Action Team (DAT) were on hand to offer shelter, food, emotional counseling and guidance on next steps. Two of the nine people affected were children, 10 and 13 years old. Nine people accepted hotel accommodations, one of the many services the DAT offers, including a nurse who can refill prescription medications.
This is the second response for the Disaster Action Team within the past month. The team responded to a multi-unit
house fire on January 14th on Main Avenue in
Stirling. That house was completely destroyed by fire and the tenants
were offered help by the Colonial Crossroads Chapter. Typically, there is a sharp rise in house fires during the
winter months and the DAT is called up frequently to provide immediate critical assistance to residents who have
lost their homes.
