Lifeguard Instructor course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (r.06) course is to train the instructor candidates to teach courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program (Lifeguarding (r.06), CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, Bloodborne Pathogens). This course includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT).

Note: The Instructor course is not designed to teach you the required basic level knowledge or skills*. This course is dedicated to developing instructor candidates' understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to accurately evaluate participants' progress.

Fee: $300 includes participant's manuals and pocket mask

Minimum Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 17 by the last scheduled day of the Instructor course
  • Swim 300 yards continuously, using these strokes in the following order: 100 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilization, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or front. 100 yards of breaststroke, using a pull, breathe, kick, glide sequence. 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke, or a combination.
  • Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
  • Competency in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer skills, First Aid Skills, and Lifeguarding Rescue Skills.
  • Pass each section of written exam with an 80% or better (Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer).
Goggles are only permitted during the 300 yard swim.

Refund Policy
Full refunds will be given only if the American Red Cross needs to cancel the course (low enrollment).

Students who do not call and do not show will receive no refund/credit; your course fee will be considered a donation to the Colonial Crossroads Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Students who cancel prior to the start of the course are entitled to a transfer credit for the full amount, but not eligible for a refund.

Instructor candidates who do not pass the precourse session and return all manuals unmarked will receive a 50% refund. Candidates who choose to stay in the course and do not successfully complete the course will not receive any refund of course fees.

Age Confirmation
Must show proof at 1st session of Instructor course. Valid forms of I.D. - government issued, such as County ID; permit, driver's license, birth certificate, or passport.
