Lifeguard Training and Re-certification at Drew University
Participants must be at least 15 years of age by completion of the course. A pre-test will be done to ensure that each student is able to:
- Swim 500 yards continuously using the freestyle elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke for at least 100 yards each
- Tread water for two minutes using legs only
- Do a surface dive of 9 feet and bring a 10-pound brick to the surface
Course content includes:
- Surveillance skills to help recognize and prevent injuries
- Rescue skills - in the water and on land
- First aid training and professional rescuer CPR
- Responsibilities of a professional lifeguard
- Spinal injury recognition and care
This course is held at Drew University and is provided by an independent but authorized Red Cross provider. Students
enrolled in the program receive the newest American Red Cross curriculum in Lifeguard Training, which includes CPR for
the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. Optional AED (Automated External Defibrillator) courses are available. Red Cross
certificates are issued upon completion of the course.
